The mathematics department believes every student can grow as a mathematician. Through curiosity, perseverance, and purposeful struggle, students will connect past learning to new ideas and discover the power of mathematics. They will think critically and creatively, communicate their reasoning in many forms, and apply their understanding to meaningful, real-world challenges. With supportive feedback and opportunities for small successes, we strive to build confidence, ignite a passion for learning, and empower every student to see themselves as capable, confident problem solvers.

Miles River Middle School utilizes the Open Up Resources math program. This program encourages student growth through problem solving and hands-on learning, uses accessible, meaningful contexts to build on student knowledge, is concept-based with tasks allowing full student participation, and embeds opportunities for developing students into mathematical thinkers. All 6th grade students register for Standard 6th Grade Math. For both 7th grade and 8th grade students, there are two course offerings, the standard program and an accelerated program.
